Deep Water Summary

California Beach Incident
Imagine a 3 year old facing a giant wave. He was standing at the beach with his father. The powerful waves of the ocean knocked him and swept over him. This incident created a lasting fear of water in young Douglas.
This shows how some incidents in childhood can create a long lasting psychological impacts.
The YMCA Pool Experience
The YMCA pool was chosen as safer alternative to natural water bodies like river or beach. The pool was 2 feet deep at the shallow end (the area with the least depth). However at the deeper end the pool was 9 feet deep. Douglas could stand comfortably in the shallow area, this gave him false confidence about the pool.
Douglas was around ten or eleven years old. He was sitting alone at the pool edge. It was a normal day. A boy who was around eighteen years old and much strong and bigger than Douglas, picked him and tossed him into the deep side of the pool which as nine feet deep. Thay bully did that without any warning, he grabbed Douglas and suddenly threw him directly to the nine feet deep end. Douglas was wearning no safety equipments.
The Drowning Experience (Important for Exams)
Douglas thought that he could handle the situation and bounce back immediately. Initially he was confident. He went down, down, and down. Then he hit the bottom of the nine foot deep pool. Then he realised about the actual situation.
His attempt to comeback – He tried to push off the pool floor with a force (like a spring). Despite the efforts he could not reach the surface of the pool because the water was deep according to his ability. His lungs began to ache from the lack of oxygen. He became dizzy (feeling as if everything is turning round and that you might fall) and disoriented. He tried to grab the pool ladder and attempted to reach or grab any of the equipments or rope. He took worried attempts to grab the water. But with time his attempts became weaker and he get unconciousness. Then he was brought out of the pool by someone and he was safe.
Psychological Impact
That trauma was more psychological than physical. Some childhood incidents or fear should not be taken lightly. The recovery from such deep mental effects can take a long time.
Since the age of four, the author has fear of water and the YMCA incident increased his exhisting fear that developed into a water phobia.
After that he completely avoided swimming and did not participated in any of ther water activites like boating, fishing, or sailing. He also avoided his friend’s water related invitations. Even thinking about water caused him anxiety. He avoided visual contact with deep water. This fear controlled his life for years. This also affected his confidence in other areas.
The Decision to Overcome Fear
After a long time, he finally decided to break his fear because it was controlling his life. He decided to face the phobia. He was tired living in the same fear, and because of this he realised that he was missing so many life experiences.
He decided to take a proffesional help and decided to commit a long term training program. He began his research and found an experienced swimming coach. That instructor was specialised in working with fear-based cases and also had some experience with aquaphobia patients
Gradually he started in very shallow water. He wore a special belt with a rope attached and his instructor held the rope all the time. He leared to exhale underwater and inhale above the water. He practiced different strokes in a systemactic way. After regular training and practice over several months his progress was slow but steady. He repeated all the movements untill they get fit in his muscle memory. After so much intensive training, Douglas became technically good and could perform standard swimming strokes and he was able to swim across the pool without any problem. He was passionate about swimming but remained terrified of water. Despite the improvement, the fear was still in his mind.
Douglas decided to swim in real water conditions to test his skills and overcome his fear. He chose Lake Wentworth for his first test and decided to swim across the entire lake. He used all his training methods and completed the lake swim. Then he decided a warm lake to dive off into the water and he was successful in it. He proved his skills in natural water bodies.
After swimming in various lakes, Douglas was finally able to overcome his fear. He continued swimming in different water situations and with each step he built more confidence and gradually eliminated all of his fear.
Transformation
He realised that the only real thing to fear is fear itself. He understood that sometimes the fear is more dangerous than the actual danger. Recognisation of fear had been his real enemy not the actual water.
After reading this summary, it is very important to practice questions that are asked in previous years. I have made a list of some important questions of deep water that you should practice.
Question 1. How did Douglas’ experience at the beach in California affect him? (CBSE 2020)
Question 2. What qualities turned Douglas into a good swimmer? (CBSE 2019)

OR How did his experience at the YMCA pool affect Douglas? (Delhi 2016)

You can see that how a same question (question 3) is repeated multiple times by changing a bit language.

The central theme of the chapter Deep Water is overcoming fear through determination
The whole theme is revolving on getting victory over deepest fears through willpower and systematic effors.
